It’s here…summer is finally here! You can now put on your swimsuit, flip flips, sunglasses and bask in the summer sun. However, for those living in pain, the arrival of summer might bring about a completely different set of feelings. Unfortunately, for those suffering from chronic pain, summer activities won’t be ‘fun in the sun’. To them, summer means expectations of spending more time outside, which eventually means more time adding stress to your aching joints or an increase in severe neck pain.  Maybe they are the type that pushes through the pain and takes advantage of the warm weather activities with family.  Or maybe the pain is just too unbearable that they continue life as usual, sitting at home and not being active any more than required.  It doesn’t matter which type of person they/you are, the simple fact is: pain gets in the way.

Take a look at the summer activities below that will actually aid in strengthening aching joints and relieve some pain all while allowing you to get outdoors and enjoy the summer with family and friends.

  1. Swimming-You know you have heard about all the benefits swimming has to offer. Pool, lake or ocean…it does’t matter! Swimming is not only a great way to relax and have fun with the family, it also is one of the best aerobic exercises that will strengthen your muscles and joints—without creating additional wear and tear on them. Did you know that being submerged in water naturally lowers your blood pressure?
  2. Bike Rides-Gather your family, strap on your helmets and hit the road one sunny day. Riding a bike is another low impact activity that will improve your overall fitness. Not to mention making cherished memories you will all remember for a lifetime.
  3. Hammock Nappin’-The body needs some time to bounce back from all those outdoor activities from time to time. Climb into a hammock under your favorite tree or on your deck and just RELAX! Your body needs rest to combat inflammation and heal your aching joints. What better place than a swinging hammock, chilling in the shade with a gentle breeze?
  4. Take a Hike-No we don’t mean it that way! Literally lace up those walking shoes, get out of the city and enjoy the great outdoors. Try heading somewhere you’ve never been for new discoveries. And if you have kids in tow, make it fun by creating a scavenger hunt—that way you won’t have to hear “are we done yet” so much! Try to locate a new lake, waterfall or nature trail. Need ideas? Hop on social media and ask friends and family for suggestions on where to go and what to see.

As with any activity, you must remember to start slowly. Work at it gradually, never throw yourself into any activity. Give your body time to ADAPT to the increasing levels of exertion.  One of the best ways to ensure your body is ready for summer is to get a Chiropractic adjustment.  It’ll help realign your spine, taking pressure off of your discs and joints, which will help avoid injuries. Give us a call 816-220-0660 today at Amundson Chiropractic Health Services to schedule your next adjustment before heading into the great outdoors.
